Firework Safety Tips

Fireworks are a joyful part of every celebration — and a safe celebration is a better one. Please read and follow these guidelines every time you light crackers, and always supervise children closely.

Before You Light

Only buy crackers from licensed, certified manufacturers — check for safety certification on the packaging.
Light fireworks only in a large, open outdoor area, away from buildings, dry leaves, and vehicles.
Keep a bucket of water or sand, and a fire extinguisher, nearby at all times.
Wear cotton clothing — avoid loose or synthetic fabric that can catch fire easily.
Read the instructions on each firework before lighting it.

While Lighting

Light one firework at a time, and only ever by one adult.
Never lean over a firework while lighting it — light at arm's length and step back immediately.
Never re-light a firework that hasn't gone off — wait, then douse it in water.
Never point or throw fireworks at another person, animal, or property.
Keep pets indoors — the noise and smoke can frighten and harm them.

Children & Supervision

Children should never light fireworks without direct, close adult supervision.
Sparklers can burn at very high temperatures — hold at arm's length and keep young children at a safe distance.
Keep a safe distance of at least a few meters for all spectators, more for aerial fireworks.

Storage

Store crackers in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and any source of flame or spark.
Keep crackers out of reach of children when not in use.
Never store fireworks near a stove, heater, or electrical appliance.

In Case of an Emergency

Douse any burning or spent firework thoroughly with water before disposal.
For minor burns, cool the area under running water for several minutes and seek medical attention if needed.
Keep emergency numbers (local fire service, ambulance) handy during celebrations.
